In the ODI World Cup 2023, Bangladesh appealed for time out against Mathews for delaying coming to the ground after the fall of the wicket, after which the umpire declared him time out. Mathews was delayed in coming to the field due to a broken helmet.

What happened during the match?

Mathews came to bat in the 25th over after the dismissal of Sadira Samarawickrama. After which he had a problem with his helmet. After which Mathews ordered another helmet from the pavilion. Seeing this delay, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Mathews. After which umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth gave Mathews out after discussion.

What is the time out rule?

 Time out is also considered a type of out in the rules made by ICC. According to ICC 40.1.1, the batsman has to come to play the next ball within 3 minutes after the fall of the wicket. It is noteworthy that in this World Cup this time has been fixed at 2 minutes.
If the batsman delays coming to the crease, the batsman is given out after an appeal by the bowling team.

This is the first time in the history of 146 years of international cricket that a batsman has been given time out. It took more than two minutes for Mathews to face his first ball, after which he was given out. This was the first time in international cricket, men's or women's, that a batsman had been given out under the "time out" rules.
